Can Teenagers Use Invisalign?

Patients have trusted Invisalign to correct their teeth for over 20 years. It is one of the most requested treatments in our office. More than ten million people experienced success with Invisalign over the past two decades and the product keeps evolving and improving.

When Invisalign debuted, it offered so many features that our younger patients believed preferable to traditional wired braces. A clear, comfortable, and removable means of repositioning teeth were on all teen’s orthodontic wish list.

Unfortunately, the early Invisalign alignment trays were not suitable for teens. The aligners offered no space for erupting molars or room to accommodate growing jaws. Dental professionals also questioned if teens would maintain the rigorous schedule of wearing Invisalign trays for 20-22 hours a day.

As time passed and technology improved, Align Technology created a series of Invisalign to meet the needs of younger patients. The Invisalign Teen system is popular with the teen patients here at our Huntington Beach cosmetic dentist office.

The improvements and alterations that make Invisalign Teen a great choice for teenage patients include:

• ADJUSTABLE TABS- Invisalign Teen alignment trays can create extra space for erupting molars and growing jaws thanks to adjustable tabs.

• BLUE COMPLIANCE DOT- The Invisalign Teen aligners have a small blue dot on the inside. As time passes, the dot will gradually disappear if your teen is wearing the trays the recommended amount of time each day. If your teen is not wearing the aligners, the blue dot serves as a reminder.

• REPLACEMENT ALIGNERS- Traditional Invisalign does not offer patients replacement aligners. The belief is that adults will keep track of their alignment trays and not subject the trays to rough treatment. Because teens are very active, it is more likely that a tray could break or be lost. If this happens, our office can give your teen a replacement.

If your teen is interested in Invisalign Teen, please feel free to contact our office. Our staff can give you helpful information as well as schedule a no-obligation consultation. At the consultation, you and your teenager can ask questions and learn about how Invisalign Teen can help your teen love their smile.

When is Invisalign Express Beneficial?

Orthodontic patients who visit our office have several choices of Invisalign treatment. We offer the full Invisalign alignment system which consists of 20 to 30 alignment trays and normally takes a year and a half for complete treatment. For our younger patients, we have the Invisalign Teen option. The treatment time varies, but this type of Invisalign has modifications to make the alignment trays suitable for teens with growing jaws and erupting molars. Another exciting option for patients who are interested in Invisalign treatment is Invisalign Express.

Invisalign Express is a treatment designed to benefit patients who have minor complaints about their smile. These are sometimes naturally occurring problems the patient has not addressed. Relapsing after braces is another common issue that Invisalign Express remedies.

The Invisalign Express alignment system works just like the full Invisalign alignment trays. It gently guides teeth out of alignment into the best position and gives our patients beautiful smiles they are proud to share with the world. Patients wear the clear alignment trays for 20-22 hours a day. The express trays come out before eating or drinking anything (except plain water), and patients must brush their teeth before putting the alignment trays in their mouths.

Patients can be self-conscious about misalignments that are not significant enough to warrant the time and expense of a full Invisalign course of treatment. In these situations, the modified express course of Invisalign treatment is the best way to perfect a smile without requiring a patient to spend a year following the treatment protocol. Our dentist often recommends the Invisalign treatment as a part of a complete smile makeover.

If you have minor misalignments, you would like to straighten, or you would like to reposition teeth relapsing to incorrect positions after past orthodontic care, please contact our office. Our staff can schedule an appointment with our cosmetic dentist to help you determine if Invisalign Express is an excellent treatment choice for you.

How Invisalign Corrects Teeth

Throughout our many years in dentistry, new procedures and ideas have come and gone. The most sought-after treatment, by far, is the Invisalign system. Our patients are pleased with their results as well as with the way Invisalign works.

To begin your Invisalign treatment, our cosmetic dentist in North Hollywood takes a digital scan of your teeth. The image goes to the Invisalign dental lab. At the lab technicians use the information to plan the movement of your teeth during your treatment. After planning the future tooth adjustments, a technician makes a series of 20 to 25 clear plastic alignment trays. These clear trays are thin, lightweight, and slide over your top and bottom teeth.

Invisalign works by using the alignment trays to guide your teeth into the optimal position in your mouth. This process happens gradually, and your Invisalign treatment usually is finished in 18 months. The process is faster than regular wire braces. Occasionally, wired braces can take three years to straighten teeth completely. Because there are no wires to tighten, our Invisalign dentist in North Hollywood provides new aligners about every two weeks. Each alignment tray is slightly different than the other aligners and will guide your teeth a little more towards the correct position.

While taking part in your Invisalign treatment, it is essential to wear the alignment trays 22 hours a day. However, you should not wear the trays while eating or drinking. Be sure to clean the aligners before you put them back into your mouth after eating and brushing your teeth. As your Invisalign treatment moves forward, our dentist will see you periodically to check your progress.

Our patients love the discreet and comfortable alignment trays as well as the fact that the removable trays mean they have no food restrictions. The thing patients enjoy the most is the brilliant smile courtesy of Invisalign.

What Can Invisalign Do?

The Invisalign alignment system is one of the most requested treatments at our office. Although its use goes back more than 20 years, many of our patients still have uncertainties and misconceptions about what the system can and cannot do.

There are very few orthodontic situations that Invisalign is unable to correct. In years past, the Invisalign system had narrow parameters and many issues that it did not correct. Because of advances in technology, most of the old restrictions are no longer a consideration. Our Invisalign provider in Tarzana recommends the alignment system for numerous problems including:

• Adjusting open bites, crossbites, overbites, and underbites.
• Closing gapped teeth
• Realigning protruding teeth
• Spacing crowded teeth
• Straightening crooked teeth

If you do have an issue which Invisalign is unable to treat, our cosmetic dentist in Tarzana can talk with you about viable treatments.

The Invisalign system consists of a series of clear and lightweight plastic alignment trays, also called aligners. The aligners fit snugly on top of your teeth and put gentle pressure on your teeth guiding them into the correct position.

During your initial visit to our office, our dentist will get impressions of your teeth. These are used to make the customized aligners. The Invisalign engineers use computer models to project the path and movement of your teeth as well as to create a series of 20 to 30 trays for you to wear during your treatment.

While removability is a popular feature of the Invisalign system, we want to remind you that you will get the best results quickly by wearing your alignment trays for at least 22 hours each day. However, you should remove them when you are eating or drinking anything except water.

Because of the consistent pressure from the alignment trays, you will need new trays about every two weeks. The new trays pick up where the previous trays stopped, and they continue moving your teeth to the planned position.

To find out if the Invisalign system may be right for you, contact our office and schedule your consultation so you can learn more about how Invisalign can help your smile.

What Teens Should Know about Invisalign

Life as a teenager can be tough. There are a lot of pressures at school, in sports and with friends. Not to mention, there’s extra pressure to look your best! Getting braces can only add to the pressures a teen faces. But there are treatment options available to teenagers that are more convenient than traditional braces. Your teen should be able to go about their day with confidence while their smile is improved.

Our experts in orthodontics can discuss Invisalign Teen with you as a better alternative. Invisalign aligners are designed to improve the smile without interrupting a teen’s life. They are completely removable and virtually invisible.  Teens can continue to enjoy sports, foods and other activities without the interruption of traditional braces. The brackets and wires can be distracting especially on the field. Teens playing sports may feel the brackets hit the inside of their mouths, which can be painful. But with Invisalign, there’s no need to worry.

The clear plastic aligners will fit right over your teen’s teeth. Then, they will gradually move and shift the teeth into place. The aligners are removed for eating, drinking and brushing teeth. The aligners will be switched out for new ones about every two weeks as the teeth move and shift into place. Watch as their smile is transformed! The SmartTrack material speeds up this process by 50%.

Oral hygiene is still very important for your teen. Make sure they brush and floss at least twice a day for two minutes. Best part is, the aligners can be removed, and so your teen doesn’t have to worry about flossing in between brackets and wires. The aligners can also be cleaned with lukewarm water before bedtime and after brushing. There are so many benefits to having properly aligned teeth. According to the American Dental Association, straight teeth carries many benefits beyond a confident smile. With Invisalign, your teen can reduce their risk of tooth decay, gum disease, jaw problems and increased wear on the tooth enamel.

Discreet Orthodontics

dental braces

Traditional metal braces can be distracting to patients who are on the self-conscious side. Fortunately, with the advancement of orthodontic solutions, there are now several discreet treatment options available.

If you are an adult who is interested in braces, you are not alone. Many teens and adults consider Invisalign as their treatment of choice because of the clear aligner trays. With clear aligners, your friends, family and co-workers will not be able to tell you receive orthodontic treatment. You can go about your routine without the potential embarrassment of visible wires and brackets. Lingual braces are another great choice because they are attached to the back of your teeth and offer the same level of privacy. Our Los Angeles orthodontist will help you decide which treatment best fits your lifestyle.

Patients will see gorgeous results from orthodontic treatment if they commit to good dental hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing daily. Our orthodontist emphasizes the importance of paying close attention when flossing between dental brackets. It is also essential to keep up with regular dental cleanings, as well.

Do I Need an Invisalign Retainer?

Junge Frau setzt lächelnd Zahnspange in den MundOne of the benefits of Invisalign treatment is that they are typically quicker than treatment with braces. Where braces usually take about two years, Invisalign Full treatment is often completed in twelve to eighteen months. Many patients, however, mistakenly believe that once treatment is over, they no longer need to wear an appliance. This is, unfortunately, untrue.

After Invisalign Full, Express, or Teen is completed, an Invisalign retainer is then necessary. This retainer works and looks similarly to a normal aligner. The main difference is that they fit the arches perfectly, and are not shaped to move the teeth, but rather keep them in place. This is to prevent the teeth from shifting back into their old positions, a situation called orthodontic relapse.

Every patient requires a retainer after treatment; there are not usually any exceptions. Our Invisalign provider in Beverly Hills will inform you how often you will need to wear this retainer. They might recommend you wear it only at night, or around the clock at first, and then only at night after a few weeks.

You have worked hard for your new smile over the past months or years, and likely do not want to lose that progress. A look at our Invisalign before and after pictures can show you what following instructions exactly can look like.

Life of an Invisalign Teen

Group of friendsInvisalign wants to ensure the treatment is available to as many patients as possible. In order to accomplish this, they offer variations of their traditional form of treatment, one of which is Invisalign Teen. This is for younger patients, typically between the ages of fourteen and eighteen. The following is a look at the average day of a patient undergoing Invisalign Teen treatment.

All patients must wear their aligners for at least twenty hours a day, only to be removed in order to eat, drink liquids other than water, and clean the teeth. It is important for patients to keep track of their aligners while they are out, so they are not forgotten or thrown away on accident. One way teens are able to see if the aligners have been worn enough over the course of two weeks is the indicator dots. These blue dots disappear with use, which allows the patient, patient’s parents, and our Invisalign dentist in Beverly Hills to know how they are doing.

About every two weeks, the patient will move on to the next aligner, which will move the teeth a bit more towards their intended spaces. Because the jaws are still growing and the wisdom teeth come in at this stage of life, the aligners are able to expand, if necessary.

What Invisalign Can Do

dispositivo ortodontico biteInvisalign technology is essential for dentists who operate on both sides of the cosmetic and orthodontic overlap. As a straightening system, it brings every advantage of traditional braces, in the form of clear plastic aligners. (This is why Invisalign is sometimes, somewhat incorrectly, described as “clear braces”.) As visual aid to a smile, you don’t have to wait excruciating months for the under-construction phase to be over. While you’re using Invisalign, most people won’t know it. The clear plastic is that discreet.

How Invisalign Works

The aligners are meant to be worn in sequence, as building blocks in a linear process toward straighter teeth. The number of aligners varies from case to case, but the order in which you wear them does not. By design, the aligners do not fit perfectly at the beginning of each stage. Your teeth are meant to fill out the aligner by gradual movement, and then be ready for the next stage.

Problems Corrected by Invisalign

In addition to straightening teeth, Invisalign is also quite good at midline correction. Your midline is an imaginary line drawn down the exact middle of your face, and is used to compare your front teeth on top to your front teeth on bottom. In many cases, this relationship is asymmetrical, which can lead to orthodontic problems.

Our expert in Invisalign in LA notes that the product is also proficient at arch expansion, which can relieve the problem of tooth crowding.
