How Invisalign Corrects Teeth

Throughout our many years in dentistry, new procedures and ideas have come and gone. The most sought-after treatment, by far, is the Invisalign system. Our patients are pleased with their results as well as with the way Invisalign works.

To begin your Invisalign treatment, our cosmetic dentist in North Hollywood takes a digital scan of your teeth. The image goes to the Invisalign dental lab. At the lab technicians use the information to plan the movement of your teeth during your treatment. After planning the future tooth adjustments, a technician makes a series of 20 to 25 clear plastic alignment trays. These clear trays are thin, lightweight, and slide over your top and bottom teeth.

Invisalign works by using the alignment trays to guide your teeth into the optimal position in your mouth. This process happens gradually, and your Invisalign treatment usually is finished in 18 months. The process is faster than regular wire braces. Occasionally, wired braces can take three years to straighten teeth completely. Because there are no wires to tighten, our Invisalign dentist in North Hollywood provides new aligners about every two weeks. Each alignment tray is slightly different than the other aligners and will guide your teeth a little more towards the correct position.

While taking part in your Invisalign treatment, it is essential to wear the alignment trays 22 hours a day. However, you should not wear the trays while eating or drinking. Be sure to clean the aligners before you put them back into your mouth after eating and brushing your teeth. As your Invisalign treatment moves forward, our dentist will see you periodically to check your progress.

Our patients love the discreet and comfortable alignment trays as well as the fact that the removable trays mean they have no food restrictions. The thing patients enjoy the most is the brilliant smile courtesy of Invisalign.

What Can Invisalign Do?

Junge Frau setzt lächelnd Zahnspange in den Mund

The Invisalign alignment system is one of the most requested treatments at our office. Although its use goes back more than 20 years, many of our patients still have uncertainties and misconceptions about what the system can and cannot do.

There are very few orthodontic situations that Invisalign is unable to correct. In years past, the Invisalign system had narrow parameters and many issues that it did not correct. Because of advances in technology, most of the old restrictions are no longer a consideration. Our Invisalign provider in Tarzana recommends the alignment system for numerous problems including:

• Adjusting open bites, crossbites, overbites, and underbites.
• Closing gapped teeth
• Realigning protruding teeth
• Spacing crowded teeth
• Straightening crooked teeth

If you do have an issue which Invisalign is unable to treat, our cosmetic dentist in Tarzana can talk with you about viable treatments.

The Invisalign system consists of a series of clear and lightweight plastic alignment trays, also called aligners. The aligners fit snugly on top of your teeth and put gentle pressure on your teeth guiding them into the correct position.

During your initial visit to our office, our dentist will get impressions of your teeth. These are used to make the customized aligners. The Invisalign engineers use computer models to project the path and movement of your teeth as well as to create a series of 20 to 30 trays for you to wear during your treatment.

While removability is a popular feature of the Invisalign system, we want to remind you that you will get the best results quickly by wearing your alignment trays for at least 22 hours each day. However, you should remove them when you are eating or drinking anything except water.

Because of the consistent pressure from the alignment trays, you will need new trays about every two weeks. The new trays pick up where the previous trays stopped, and they continue moving your teeth to the planned position.

To find out if the Invisalign system may be right for you, contact our office and schedule your consultation so you can learn more about how Invisalign can help your smile.

Adults and Orthodontic Treatments

dental braces

More and more adults are seeking orthodontic treatments to improve their smile. Fortunately, there are advances in orthodontics that allow individuals to get braces that are more convenient than traditional methods. We understand that getting braces as an adult can be inconvenient, as adults (unlike children), are busy and may not want braces on for a lengthy period of time.

Getting adult braces does not have to be a daunting process. Now there are many options available to older individuals who want to speed up this process and make it more suitable to their lifestyles. If you choose to go the inexpensive route, you can opt for traditional braces, which include metal brackets and wiring. While they don’t look very glamorous, they are now lighter than ever before and very effective in correcting most orthodontic issues that plague adults.

There are also options that look less visible on the teeth such as lingual and ceramic braces. Lingual braces are worn on the back of the teeth so they are not seen from the front. However, this option isn’t the best for everyone. Often lingual braces are for people with more minor corrections. Ceramic braces are much like the traditional option except they are lighter in weight and the color of enamel. This is great because they are less visible than traditional methods.

There is also another orthodontic treatment options called Invisalign. This method is very popular for improving the smile because they are not braces at all. Instead, our experts can fit you with clear plastic aligners that can be removed at any time. They are virtually invisible so you can smile with confidence. This is also very convenient because they can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing and sleeping. As your teeth move and shift into place, the aligners are switched out (usually every week). Often, the length of time these are worn is much shorter than the other methods listed above.

The length of time for any orthodontic treatment will depend on your case. It could be as little as six months up to a couple years before treatment is complete. If you have crooked teeth, crowding, overbite, underbite, or misaligned teeth, talk to our dentist in North Hollywood. We can discuss the best orthodontic options available to you so that you can improve your smile. Schedule a consultation with us to get started.

What Teens Should Know about Invisalign

Life as a teenager can be tough. There are a lot of pressures at school, in sports and with friends. Not to mention, there’s extra pressure to look your best! Getting braces can only add to the pressures a teen faces. But there are treatment options available to teenagers that are more convenient than traditional braces. Your teen should be able to go about their day with confidence while their smile is improved.

Our experts in orthodontics can discuss Invisalign Teen with you as a better alternative. Invisalign aligners are designed to improve the smile without interrupting a teen’s life. They are completely removable and virtually invisible.  Teens can continue to enjoy sports, foods and other activities without the interruption of traditional braces. The brackets and wires can be distracting especially on the field. Teens playing sports may feel the brackets hit the inside of their mouths, which can be painful. But with Invisalign, there’s no need to worry.

The clear plastic aligners will fit right over your teen’s teeth. Then, they will gradually move and shift the teeth into place. The aligners are removed for eating, drinking and brushing teeth. The aligners will be switched out for new ones about every two weeks as the teeth move and shift into place. Watch as their smile is transformed! The SmartTrack material speeds up this process by 50%.

Oral hygiene is still very important for your teen. Make sure they brush and floss at least twice a day for two minutes. Best part is, the aligners can be removed, and so your teen doesn’t have to worry about flossing in between brackets and wires. The aligners can also be cleaned with lukewarm water before bedtime and after brushing. There are so many benefits to having properly aligned teeth. According to the American Dental Association, straight teeth carries many benefits beyond a confident smile. With Invisalign, your teen can reduce their risk of tooth decay, gum disease, jaw problems and increased wear on the tooth enamel.

Do I Need an Invisalign Retainer?

Junge Frau setzt lächelnd Zahnspange in den MundOne of the benefits of Invisalign treatment is that they are typically quicker than treatment with braces. Where braces usually take about two years, Invisalign Full treatment is often completed in twelve to eighteen months. Many patients, however, mistakenly believe that once treatment is over, they no longer need to wear an appliance. This is, unfortunately, untrue.

After Invisalign Full, Express, or Teen is completed, an Invisalign retainer is then necessary. This retainer works and looks similarly to a normal aligner. The main difference is that they fit the arches perfectly, and are not shaped to move the teeth, but rather keep them in place. This is to prevent the teeth from shifting back into their old positions, a situation called orthodontic relapse.

Every patient requires a retainer after treatment; there are not usually any exceptions. Our Invisalign provider in Beverly Hills will inform you how often you will need to wear this retainer. They might recommend you wear it only at night, or around the clock at first, and then only at night after a few weeks.

You have worked hard for your new smile over the past months or years, and likely do not want to lose that progress. A look at our Invisalign before and after pictures can show you what following instructions exactly can look like.
