Common TMJ Symptoms

Experts are not entirely sure at the moment why TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disease, develops in patients. What we do know is that it often occurs after a physical accident in that area, or due to high levels of stress. It is important to keep an eye out for TMJ symptoms in order to be able to recognize TMJ in case it arises.

TMJ can be difficult to diagnose, as its symptoms can affect many areas and be hard to recognize. These symptoms include pain and/or discomfort in the:

• Jaw
• Face
• Head
• Ears
• Neck
• And shoulders

Other common symptoms are tinnitus (ringing in the ears), lock jaw, and difficultly chewing and speaking. Bruxism, or the habitual clenching and grinding of the teeth, is also common. Many combinations of these can look like several other disorders or illnesses, making it difficult to diagnose. If you recognize any of these symptoms in your daily life, you should see our Thousand Oaks TMJ dentist as soon as possible. We can work with you to develop the best treatment to eliminate your symptoms and restore health. Many patients respond to stress relief, meditation, physical therapy, bite guards, and anti-inflammatory medications.

About TMJ Pain

The most common and noticeable symptom of TMJ is pain. Pain can be caused by this condition for several reasons. The jaw bone may be grinding against another, inflammation can cause swelling and discomfort, or the nearby nerve can become irritated. This is largely due to the fact that the temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex in the entire body, as it is surrounded by ligaments, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. It is important to be able to identify the types of pain TMJ causes, as well as other symptoms, in order to be able to identify the condition should it arise.

TMJ can cause pain in the:

• Side of the face
• Entire jaw
• Head
• Ears
• Neck
• Teeth
• And shoulders

It can also lead to lock jaw, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and difficulty chewing. Many patients with TMJ also suffer from bruxism, clenching and grinding the teeth, particularly at night, as a direct result. Our Los Angeles TMJ dentists can perform exams and x-rays to identify the source of your pain. Fortunately, there are several forms of treatment for TMJ. They include stress reduction, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and more. If you believe you are suffering from TMJ pain, schedule an appointment for an exam today.

Why are Dental Exams Needed?

Smart businesswoman

Brushing and flossing your teeth every day is a very important step in keeping your smile healthy and looking beautiful. These tasks do a lot to remove bacteria and food particles that accumulate during the day. But only a dentist with the right tools can remove plaque and get the teeth as clean as they can possibly be. This is why attending regular dental exams is vital to your continuing dental and oral health.

During a dental exam appointment, our cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills will examine all the areas of the mouth, including the teeth, gums, tongue, and soft tissues. This will give them a good idea if you have any risk of tooth decay or other conditions. You will likely need to take dental x-rays, which provide a better look at the oral-facial structure. There are several different types of dental x-rays, including bite wing and periapical. These allow our dentist to better assess the health of the teeth, tooth roots, and jaw.

There are several serious dental and oral conditions that will worsen if not detected early. For example, patients with oral cancer have a much higher chance of restored health when diagnosed early. Similarly, those with certain overall health conditions, such as diabetes, must attend exam appointments more frequently, as there is a greater risk of gum disease.

If it has been more than six months since your last exam appointment, be sure to schedule one today.

What is Done in Preventive Dentistry?

Happy patient

Preventive dentistry is designed to prevent dental problems. Dental diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease are the leading causes of tooth loss, but they are both highly preventable with the right dental care. Our North Hollywood dentist offers treatments and preventive strategies that can help you keep your smile healthy and happy.

Good dental hygiene forms the basis of any good preventive strategy. We provide our patients with information about the best techniques and tools to eliminate plaque and bacteria from their teeth. Brushing and flossing alone are not enough to eliminate the risk of dental disease. You also need regular dental checkups.

Preventive exams are used to examine your mouth for any signs of dental disease, including early symptoms that can be easy to miss at home. We will clean and polish your teeth, and recommend specific treatments as needed.

Other preventive treatments include fluoride treatments and dental sealants. Both of these are designed to reduce the risk of decay. Sealants protect the biting surfaces of your teeth from the attacks of oral bacteria, while fluoride helps harden the enamel to make it more resilient against bacterial acids. Orthodontics can also be used in preventive dentistry, used to treat malocclusions that could increase your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorders, and other common dental problems.

Call our office today to learn more about preventive treatments, or to schedule an appointment with our expert in preventive dentistry.

How Long does Teeth Whitening Treatment Take?

Woman at the dentistry

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments of today. Patients with a dull, yellowed, or darkened smile can brighten their teeth in several different ways. Kits are available from many stores for at-home treatment you can do yourself, but many patients opt for in-office treatment with our Beverly Hills teeth whitening doctor.

At-home treatments typically take a few days to show any results. They usually consist of trays that are filled with the whitening gel. They are placed on the teeth for a few minutes each time. Patients are encouraged not use the kit any longer, each time or overall, than instructed, as this can lead to enamel loss and tooth sensitivity.

Only one in-office session is needed to brighten the teeth as much as eight shades brighter. This takes three rounds of gel or liquid, for about fifteen minutes each. This means that most appointments last about forty five minutes.

How long the effects of teeth whitening last is largely dependent on the patient. To keep your teeth white and bright for as long as possible, be sure to avoid staining substances, such as coffee, tea, and berries. Talk to our dentist to learn which type of whitening treatment is best for you.
