Dental Implants Compared to Other Tooth Restoration Options

If you are missing a tooth or several teeth, a popular restoration option is the placement of dental implants. Given that there are other tooth restoration options also available, how do dental implants compare with some of those other choices?

Dental Bridge

With a dental bridge, a missing tooth is replaced with a prosthetic tooth that is anchored by the support of the surrounding teeth. In order to be fitted with a bridge, these healthy surrounding teeth need to be trimmed down so that they can act as the abutments for supporting the prosthetic tooth. This is not required with dental implants, as they are surgically placed directly into the spot where the missing tooth was located. Since dental implants are drilled directly into the jawbone, they actually stimulate the bone and keep it healthy. This is not the case with a bridge, unfortunately.

Removable Dentures

Dentures are designed to sit on top of the gums. This setup can make it difficult for the patient to chew and speak normally. Also, dentures are prone to causing soreness of the gums, as they can shift in your mouth and even fall out if you are not careful. With fixed bridges supported by dental implants, there is no moving around. They are secured tightly in the mouth, where they do not affect speaking or eating. Additionally, many patients find fixed bridges much more comfortable than removable dentures.
