What is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring is another name for crown lengthening. This is a procedure that can be used to restore a tooth or to correct a gummy smile. Patients who are candidates for crown lengthening can usually complete treatment in a single visit, but some patients may need additional appointments to help them achieve their goals.

You may be a candidate for contouring if you have:

• A gummy smile, or a smile that reveals excessive gum tissue
• Decay along the gum line or beneath the gum line
• A tooth that has broken off near the gum line
• A tooth that has damage near or beneath the gum line

Our Beverly Hills periodontist begins by numbing the area using a local anesthetic. The soft tissues are gently separated from the tooth or teeth being treated, and they are carefully contoured. Although the procedure can be performed on a single tooth, several teeth may need to be treated for more aesthetic results.

There is little downtime after a crown lengthening procedure. Most patients are able to return to their typical daily activities quickly although they may need to eat a soft diet for a few days and take precautions when brushing or flossing. If you are having a crown, filling, or other treatments after your crown lengthening, these may be performed at a later appointment. Give us a call today to learn more about available periodontal treatments or to schedule an appointment with our dentist.
